Why Discomfort Is a Sign You Are Growing

We often talk about growth as though it is something that happens once we have found confidence.

In reality, confidence usually comes afterwards.

Think about the moments in your own life that have changed you. Starting a new job. Returning to education. Leaving a relationship that no longer felt right. Learning to speak up when you would once have stayed quiet. Those experiences probably did not feel comfortable while you were living through them. They may even have left you questioning yourself.

That does not mean you were moving in the wrong direction.

Growth has a habit of unsettling us because it asks us to become someone we have not been before. It requires us to step beyond familiar routines and predictable outcomes. There is often a period where the old version of ourselves no longer fits, but the new version has not fully developed either.

It is an uncomfortable place to be.

The same principle can be seen in the body.

Exercise challenges our muscles by asking them to work harder than they are used to. During recovery, the body repairs and strengthens those muscles so they are better prepared for the same challenge in the future. Without that challenge, there is very little reason for the body to adapt. The NHS encourages regular strength-based exercise because our bodies become stronger when they are given an appropriate level of demand over time.

Our minds adapt in much the same way.

Learning something new can feel frustrating because our brains are building new pathways rather than relying on familiar ones. Research into neuroplasticity has shown that the brain continues to change throughout life, allowing us to learn, adapt and recover in response to new experiences. More recent research also highlights that physical activity itself supports the biological processes involved in brain adaptation.

This is one of the reasons I think people give up on themselves too soon.

We expect progress to feel reassuring, so when it feels uncertain we assume something has gone wrong. We mistake discomfort for failure when, quite often, it is simply evidence that we are stretching beyond what has become familiar.

That does not mean every difficult situation should be tolerated.

There is a difference between the discomfort that comes from learning and the distress that comes from remaining somewhere unhealthy. A workplace that destroys your confidence is not helping you grow. A relationship that leaves you feeling unsafe is not building resilience. Growth should stretch you, not diminish you.

Sometimes the greatest lesson is not achieving the goal we originally set ourselves.

Perhaps you apply for a promotion and do not get it, or perhaps you start a project that changes direction halfway through. Maybe you discover that the future you imagined is not actually the future you want.

Those experiences are not wasted. They reveal something about your values, your strengths or the way you respond when life does not unfold according to plan. That understanding is valuable because it stays with you long after the disappointment has passed.

Looking back, many of the moments that shape us most are not the ones that felt easy.

They are the conversations we were nervous to have, the decisions we delayed because they felt overwhelming, and are the first steps we almost talked ourselves out of taking.

Growth asks us to exchange certainty for possibility. It is rarely a comfortable exchange, but it often leads us somewhere we could never have reached by standing still.

If life feels unsettled at the moment, resist the temptation to see that as proof you are failing. It may simply be a sign that you are becoming someone with greater experience, deeper self-awareness and more confidence than you had before.
